Resistance Band Safety
 |
Resistance tubing or fitness bands are a great way to add resistance to your workout without using free weights. Be sure to use them properly, whether you're taking a Baby Boot Camp class or using one at home, Proper usage not only adds to the life of your bands, but it can also prevent injuries. Follow these tips for a safe and effective workout.
- Wrap your resistance tube around a smooth, stationary object (less than 6" diameter pole is best) for resistance training. Do not wrap the tube around a tree--the abrasive surface can cause a tube to deteriorate and potentially break.
- When doing upper body exercises which require you to step on the tubing, do not step on the handles, which can easily break, and do not extend both handles above shoulder height at the same time. The only time it is OK to extend the resistance tubing over head is with one handle (and the opposite end of the band under your feet).
- When performing an exercise in which you must step on the tubing, try to stick to grass, carpet or another non-abrasive surface. If possible, avoid using the resistance tube on concrete, which can cause the tube to deteriorate and break.
