Go Mama Go!
Whether you’re pregnant or recently had a baby, the experience is tantamount to competing in your first triathlon. Like any physical fitness undertaking, preparing your body in stages and getting some technical gear to help keep things running smoothly is essential.
GET READY
Before exercising, you need your doctor’s clearance. If you had a regular fitness routine before you got pregnant, you’re probably o.k. to continue until your doctor (or your body) says otherwise. Once you’ve had the baby, your OB/GYN will give you the green light between 4-6 weeks after giving birth provided it was an uncomplicated delivery.
GET SET
Now for the fun part – shopping. Comfort is key when motivation to exercise is low. Gear up with the following:
Shoes — While pregnant your feet change size and your gait, or how you foot makes contact with the ground, changes too. Go to a reputable running shoe store and get fitted by a professional; a gait analysis is usually free and encouraged.
Sports Bra — One of the “perks” of pregnancy is your enhanced chest. You’ll need a sports bra that banishes the bounce and wicks away moisture. Plan ahead and get one that’s a combo nursing and sports bra with easy-access fasteners. La Leche League, Title Nine Sports and Lucy all sell quality sports bras online.
Clothes — Get three or four key exercise pieces that make you feel good! A new pair of boot-cut yoga pants or workout capris in your current size, a nice dri-fit tank top, t-shirt and long-sleeve shirt should do the trick. Look for workout tops that are longer around the waist. Due Maternity online has a great selection.
GO!
Now that you’re outfitted, it’s go time! Think of the outdoors as your gym and start walking. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and being outside makes everyone happier. While pregnant, walking will keep fluid from collecting in your ankles and keep your spirits high. After baby is born, walking is still something you can easily do even with an infant. If you have a travel system carseat/stroller combo, you’re set. Once baby is older, you can transition to a jogging stroller and go, go, go!
