Cheap Fats are Killing Us

Take Responsibility. Read Labels.
Apples, bananas, tomatoes and broccoli. It’s all relatively basic when it comes to whole foods. But, when shelf stable processed foods enter the picture we pick up the product, turn it around and read the list of ingredients. Anything with high-fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oils is put back on the shelf. My 6 year old daughter simply calls it, “junk”.
Partially hydrogenated vegetable fat is a disease-promoting artificial fat used primarily in fast food and other commercially manufactured foods. From animal crackers to zwieback toast, you can find hydrogenated oils in most foods at your mainstream grocery store. This synthetic ingredient inflames the arteries and accelerates heart disease.
Health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally.
The average per-capita intake of 5 g per day in the United States increases the risk for heart disease by approximately 25%. A kids meal at McDonald's can have up to 10 grams of trans fats.
Cheap oils (hydrogenated oils) and cheap sugars (high fructose corn syrups) are killing us. Stop experimenting on our children and on ourselves. Know your food.
Interesting Facts about Hydrogenated Oils
• Studies show there is a 40% increase in breast cancer in women eating hydrogenated oils.
• In 2004 Denmark banned hydrogenated oils.
• In 2006, New York City adopted the United State’s first major municipal ban on most artificial trans fats in restaurant cooking.
